Everything changes over the years. But we only change some, I mean not more than humans over their lifetime, and those too close to us don't change at all. Which is why we can't keep humans too close, they somehow cannot deal with that. [He shrugs. It sucks, but he has gotten over it a long time ago. Or so he tells himself.] Animals can, though. The little dog that Fin and Sweden have is several centuries old now by what I can tell, and Ned has had a rabbit fer about the same amount of time.
[Armin glances at Denmark at that. So does that mean he shouldn't bother trying to get to know Denmark if he'll keep him at arm's length? He had thought that he seemed very friendly, but maybe it was just a front.]
Nah, it's just normal. Spent too much time with nations, so she's just not getting older... and human brains think too much fer that, or something. Don't worry though [he grins and slaps Armin's back] that doesn't seem ta be a problem here.
Um, well. Good? [Armin's not sure what to make of that, but anything that would get in the way of him finally having a growth spurt can stay well away.]
I wonder how that works, though. Did you ever have an anyone who stopped ageing around you? [He's starting to realise that that would be pretty lonely, though. Only your own kind and a few animals for company and he's not sure how many 'nations' there are.]
[good luck with that growth spurt in a place where nobody grows, Armin]
Maybe when I was very young. As a small kid ya don't really judge situations all that well. [and by very young he means a human age of somewhere around four or five.]
I can control how long I allow people and myself ta stay close, right?
It's not that bad, I have a lot of great citizens, and I can never meet all of them in a liftime, so not being able ta stay with any of them fer long will just mean that I'll meet more. [of course there are negative side too, but he will concentrate on the positive ones]
[Armin's pretty impressed with that positive outlook and he nods. He's certainly not going to point out the downsides for Denmark.] I suppose that's nice! Can you remember them all, though?
it gets fuzzy after a while. There's some people that stick, but... ya know how history gets more and more vague the further back in time ya go because the tradition gets tweaked by time and every traditor hands down a bit less than the one before? Memory does the same thing. And then there's so many that sometimes ya aren't sure anymore if ya mix people up. But some stay in yer memory very clearly because they were somehow more important ta ya. Fer good or bad reasons. Often both.
[Armin considers this, but it's not something he's heard of before. So much history was lost when they retreated behind the walls that it's hard to imagine the wealth of history that Denmark's world must have and how it would decay over time. It makes sense, though, and he slowly nods.]. I suppose human memory works the same way; you recall important things and other things fade. So many memories though! And so many people too.
