The Scouting Legion are those who go beyond the wall to where the titans are to fight them.
Is that a thing that happens in the north? [Excitement lights up Armin's eyes and he can't help but lean forward.] Is this where the land is covered in ice? Is that how it stays covered like that? The days do get shorter in winter, and it's just darker generally, where I'm from.
We go out to discover more about them. We don't know where they come from or how they breed - they don't have reproductive organs - so there's no way to diminish their numbers until we know that. But we also want to try and block the hole in Wall Maria so we can at least reclaim that part of the land.
Yeah, in Nor's and Fin's places there are areas where it doesn't get light at one point in the winter. But I'm further down, days are only fairly short... Makes getting up in the morning even harder. Don't ya hate that?

Uh, well, I'm not sure what you need, but I have experience of cleaning and I used to do my own repair work on my 3d manoeuvre gear so I think I could expand on that. And grounds work too! I worked on a farm when I was younger. And I'm disciplined and a hard worker and I get on well with people. I lived with the other trainees and never fought with them! I used to mediate between Eren and Jean sometimes, although.
[Armin shakes his head.] But I can learn! I'm a quick learner. I'd like to learn. I want to know about all of the things that we don't have at home. I want to experience all the things that I can.
How much time would ya want ta spend here? If I learn ya how ta do the maintenance fer the cabins and saunas, but ya'd have ta work more than just a few hours on weekends then.
School still leaves me with a lot of time, so I don't mind coming every day for a couple of hours afterwards, if that's all right? [It'll be less time to read, but he'll still find time for that.]
Nor'll show ya how it all works, and when he thinks that ya're doing good enough work he'll let ya off.
And should ya do a shit job, he'll kick ya out. But ya'll do yer best, right? So. I need ya... [he digs through the paperwork for a bit and then comes up with a contract] ta write yer name down here and here and here, and yer age and yer address here, and if ya have any health issues here, so we can take care that ya won't be affected adversely while working here. Ya have a month of trial, and if that works out well, ya have three months cancellation notice period, that means that if ya want ta leave or if we want ta leave, ya'll keep working fer three months after one notifies the other parties, unless there is a mutual agreement ta the contrary.
I'll do my best! [Armin promises, eager to prove himself. And he means it too! He wants to do what he can. He pulls the contract over so he can read it, focusing on it rather than Denmark for a little while, and once he's read it call carefully fills in his details.]
I don't have any health issues. I mean, I'm not as strong as some of the others, but I still passed training.
Oh! Do you have 3D manouever gear where you're from? That was our primary concern, but we did hand to hand combat as well and gunmanship, as well as general physical trials. And theoretical studies as well, tactics and the mechanics of the 3D gear. I was best at that, to be honest. Oh, and we worked with horses some as well, but I've done more of that since joining the Scouting Legion.
"Three D manoeuvre gear?" He shakes his head. That does sound interesting, but no, he has no idea.
"And the rest sounds more like what we have, I guess... I remember when we drilled soldiers mostly on shooting, and half the time they would lose eyes to their guns at some point... that really has gotten a lot safer."
I've never heard of someone losing an eye! [Armin's not as startled as you'd expect from a young man though. He's seen worse.] But then again people who fail have to go to work else where so maybe...

It's coiled wire powered by gas that'll carry a man's weight, and we can use that to get high or move fast. And detachable blades as well, so if we break one it's not so bad.
And yeah, the losing an eye thing sucked. The ammunition just wasn't safe yet, it could explode on the soldiers... but ya always have ta get through stages of learning ta get anywhere, right?

There were a lot of accidents when the 3D gear was being invented. [He admits thoughtfully.] Guns were already invented when the walls were built, though, so I suspect if something similar happened we lost the evidence.
I got my axe, and my nation body, and I bet there will be chances ta get something again! Ya cannot really pick, but people seem ta normally get things important ta them so if that would be important ta ya ya have good chances there.
What's a nation body? [Armin frowns. It sounds - well it sounds like something kind of horrible.] Has anyone ever got someone important to them rather than something? [Because if not he can only think of one other thing that might be returned to him. He doesn't have much in the way of possessions.]
It... is not complete, here. But as close as it can be without giving me a connection ta my world back home, I guess. Means I can't die fer good and heal faster and more completely, and can probably stay alive without food. And it takes longer ta get drunk, and I don't throw up from a single punch. Because what really affects our health are things that happen ta us as nations, not as single persons.
[He scratches his head] But here it's just weird, because we're separate but that still works, and we still have no connection ta our people and soil...
And ya can't get people. At least I never heard of it, and I bet I'd been given Faroes by now if that was possible. Or Green.
